There's no easy way to catch a leprechaun. Leprechauns can be devious creatures and are extremely clever. But one piece of equipment you will absolutely need is a leprechaun trap!
There is a famous story from Ireland which tells about a man who set a leprechaun trap in a forest at the end of a very long rainbow. The man built his very own leprechaun trap and I will tell you how to make the same leprechaun trap further down the page.
The man was lucky enough to trap a very rich little leprechaun quite close to a faery fort. Once he had the leprechaun firmly in his grasp he looked him in the eye and asked to be told where the pot of gold coins was hidden.
Now a good Irish men and women understand that when you have a leprechaun in such a precarious position he must tell you where he has hidden his pot of gold! Therefore the tiny leprechaun showed the man where he hid his pot of gold at the bottom of a tree. After he had sworn an oath that he wouldn't dig it up and move it, the man duly knotted a bright red handkerchief around the trunk of the tree and set off to get a shovel.
I hope you know how devious leprechauns can be but the man didn't! When the man returned to the forest to take home the crock of gold, he discovered, there was a red handkerchief on hundreds of trees. He shouldn't have trusted a leprechaun!
So what did the man use to build his leprechaun trap?
So he could build his leprechaun trap he got:
One box the same size as a shoe box.
Some chocolate gold coins but you might want to use popcorn painted gold which can be much better.
Lots tissues.
A box of straws.
Take the box try to get a shoe box because leprechauns are shoe makers and colour it green you can also add lots of shiny shapes or shamrocks as leprechauns favourite colour is green. You can add lots of reflective colours or objects as well to your leprechaun trap. Put lots of colourful tissues inside the leprechaun trap. Don't push it down too much just let it sit loose inside the box so when weight is placed inside the box the paper gets squashed.
To ensure the little man is able to get into the leprechaun trap you must to make a ladder. You can do this by cutting-up 5 straws (get an adult to do it) into half. Take the three half straws and stick one end to a large straw and the other end to a different large straw. Repeat for the other small straws until you have two big straws with little straws stuck between them at intervals - just like a ladder. This should be good enough for the leprechaun to climb up and get in the leprechaun trap!
Put your golden covered chocolate coins on the tissue paper inside your leprechaun trap. The gold popcorn will make the greedy little leprechaun will think they are gold nuggets and get extremely excited.
You use chocolate coins or gold painted popcorn due to the fact that they are not as heavy as real coins which would drop through the paper in exactly the same way that the leprechaun is going to!
Now place your leprechaun trap in the garden or in a nice green area and and hope that an especially rich leprechaun comes. There is a fairly good chance at least one leprechaun will get into the box but don't be surprised if he runs off. After all they are well renowned as being devious little creatures.
Nobody has caught one in a long time but perhaps you will break this bad luck. If the leprechaun escapes he will most likely leave evidence he has been there by leaving a trail of golden glitter dust or by dropping a few coins as he runs away. So at least you will know he has been there in your leprechaun trap!
